Freud... take 2

Ego psychology again:
Coping – describes all conscious tools and actions a person uses to react to their environment. It has 3 parts to it: being able to learn and sort out new knowledge, being able to contain the feelings that are generated, and being able to perform in the world.
Competence – how well a person is able to actively function in world. Level of competence influences growth as a person and self worth
Ego Strength – sum of person’s positive aspects interacting with others.  In contrast, ego weakness describes ways a person is unsuccessful in interacting with others.
Ego Harmony - comprised of 4 parts
Reality Testing – comparisons of what is happening vs what self wants to happen. Helps person understand why an action produces certain results
Reality of the World – works with reality of self to help to feel difference between what is inside and what is in the world
Reality of Self – works with reality of the world to help feel difference between what is inside and what is in the world
Judgment – being able to list all available reactions and figure out what results will occur on each reaction and then make the decision on the reaction that fits situation

Thoughts: It seems as though if someone lacks ego harmony, they don’t understand why others react the way that they do to the person’s choices. This would result in the ego being more inclined to follow the id instead of staying in check by the superego. The ego would tend to follow the id more if one of the stages of psychosexual development was unresolved creating doubt and mistrust that needs would be fulfilled if following societal rules.
